ELI Forums Being converted to (https) standard
« on: January 09, 2018, 02:16:29 AM »
It has been long overdue but the ELI Forums is being converted to https standard to increase security over Internet connections. Google has been strongly encouraging all website owners to do this. With Robert's help, we began preliminary work on this in 2017. The smaller Wordpress side was successfully converted in 2017. However, the much larger and more complicated ELI Forums has taken more time and required more effort.

As of January 2018, I believe we have converted most of ELI to https but there may still be elements we have missed.  If there are errors, bugs, or anything we have missed, please let me know so we can correct them.

Please email me any bugs or technical errors you have experienced to matt30060 / gmail. And allow me to apologize in advance for the inconvenience.

I'm a non-lawyer but not legally ignorant either. Under the 1st Amendment, I have the right to post facts & opinions using rhetorical hyperbole, colloquialisms, metaphors, parody, snark, or epithets. Under Section 230 of CDA, I'm only responsible for posts I write, not what others write.

In the interest of keeping the community informed on the recent conversion of the ELI Forums to https standard, it appears I made one big goof. In trying to set read-only status to some older, outdated boards, I accidentally turned off the the ability to post new topic and respond to existing topics.

I should have set myself up a standard user account (non-admin) to test it out. If I had done that, I would have caught it. Unfortunately, because of my mistake there were no new posts the last 2.5 days.

Another issue that I have noticed that we may all have to live with is that I noticed that forum performance is a bit slower than I am used to. As I understand it, https carries a bit of overhead and it feels sluggish. As an admin, I am not immune to the overhead that seems to come with https so I will be monitoring this.

I hope this conversion to https doesn't create too many more inconveniences for all of us. I will be monitoring things and watching people's feedback and comments.
