I received the first letter from GI regarding an image I had used in July, 2011. i believe that this image was on my site for less than 3 months, but am not 100% sure. Can the search software that they use document the length of time that the image remained on the site? Opinions...?

probably not, but they can see it thru archive.org, and perhaps googles archive..there are some posts here regarding getting removed, kindly use the search feature, as I'm too tired and worn out to type it all right now..

Agreed. The software can't determine the length of the alleged infringement.
They look up the site in question on a web archive site to determine that.
If they can't find your site there, they would normally just consider the length of the infringement to be from when they detect it until the date that the image is removed.
