Canadian firm monitoring illegal downloading for court cases

"Massive lawsuits targeting people who illegally download copyrighted content are common in the U.S., where people have been stuck with hefty fines and out-of-court settlement and now, there's an attempt to bring that to Canada."

"Bill C-11 imposed a limit of $5,000 on damages awarded for non-commercial copyright infringement, which applies to the average consumer who downloads films."

Owners of "Grumpy Cat" vow to sue infringers

"The owners of feline internet sensation Grumpy Cat have applied for trademarks over a wide range of merchandise, such as cell phone covers, beer mugs and video games. The cat’s lawyer, however, says the owners will “try to be cool and stay righteous” about kitty-related fan art, and will only go after “dirtbags” who defiantly attempt to cash in..."

"Copyright law is in place to protect artistic expression, not individual ideas"

"Harney’s creation consists primarily of subject matter — ‘facts’ — that he had no role in creating, including the central element of the photo: the daughter riding piggyback on her father’s shoulders
Harney’s difficulty in alleging infringement is that almost none of the protectable aspects of [his photo] are replicated in the [Sony image]."

Getty Images employee says "middle management should be thrown in traffic"

http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-Getty-Images-RVW2269698.htm

"Pros – decent pay, super casual dress environment

Cons – middle management is useless, doesn't really grasp what their staff do, non-technical mgmt in charge of technical departments, ultra-silo'd, cranky vp with a napoleon complex. Not solutions-oriented.

Advice to Senior Management – Find a different field to work in. You don't understand what your employees do, therefore you do not have the capacity to properly evaluate what they do."

"SOPA" is back in virus form... demands 200 dollar payment for "infringement"...

http://torrentfreak.com/sopa-is-back-as-a-ransomware-virus-121011/

'The SOPA virus is so-called ransomware, meaning that it holds computers hostage and only promises to free data after victims hand over cash.
In the U.S. and Canada people are instructed to pay with a MoneyPak prepaid voucher, and in other parts of the world they can use Western Union.

Those who don’t pay within three days are in trouble, the virus maker warns.

“WARNING!!!: If you don’t pay the fine within 72 HOURS at the amount of 200 USD, all your computer data will be erased.”'

"It’s Time To Debunk The Myth That Copyright Is Needed To Make Money"

"We have created since we learned to put red paint on the inside of cave walls, not because of the possibility of making money, but because of who we are, because of how we are wired.
(Usually, people who are into life for the money don’t go into artistry in the first place. They go to law school or medical school."

Warner Bros, Hotfile and EFF Fight Over Bogus DMCA notices

"Hotfile alleged that after giving Warner access to its systems, the studio wrongfully took down files including games demos and Open Source software without holding the copyrights to them.
Wrongful takedowns continued even after the movie studio was repeatedly notified about the false claims."

"In a response, Warner Bros. admitted the accusations. However, the movie studio argued that they are not to blame because the mistakes were not made in bad faith.
As a result, the false takedown requests were not “deliberate lies.” "

Is the “Copyright Defense League” masquerading as a law firm?  That’s illegal.
Additionally, they have practically NO web presence
where are they getting customers from?
Think about it
