I'll second the motion to sticky this post!

Another site worth looking at is http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/

They offer 2 options for royalty free licenses . "This licence comes in two flavors: "Free" and "Purchased". The only difference between them is that if you use a free image you must publish the name of the image creator adjacent to where the image is used.  Purchased images do not have this requirement.

The purchase price seems to be much lower than the other stock companies, but the choices are also limitied.

I no longer use any stock image companies, I now create my own images or insist that my clients supply them, knowing the risks involved.

Just looking for pictures, and this site is now owned by iStock/Getty

Legal Controversies Forum / CANIPRE Extortion Letters

This will sound familiar to some.
This company "CANIPRE" send out demand letters claiming that they are entitled to $5,000.00 but then settle for less.

Here is the article:  http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/notice-and-notice-system-internet-copyright-enforcement-settlement-1.3823986

I just want to update people on my case.
As a recap, I received a Getty letter back in the summer of 2011.
I had Oscar write me a letter.
It's been three years, and not a peep from Getty.

THANK YOU ELI FAMILY.

Thanks Jerry,

I knew there was a list. I'm going to purchase my image through pond5.

6
Thanks Greg. I knew one of them had the word pond in it.

I was sure there was a thread that had a list of "safe" image companies, but am having brain fart and can't find it.

7
Is there a running list of safe companies?
Is 123rf safe?

Robert, the letter posted by the original poster above says that the money is going to picscout. It says to remit payment to "License compliance services Picsout Inc" or "Bank of America Picscout Inc"

...

@ SG and/or Bernicem77 what are the Canadian equivenalts of the AG, BBB and FTC?

I hope this helps and please keep us posted as to your progress.

We do have BBBs here in Canada. I think we could also complain to the Ministry of Consumer Services. Other than not, not sure where you could complain.

For the record, I use YAHOO.com small business as my webservice provider. I hired Oscar because my letter came from Getty USA. I'm guessing it came from Getty USA because I use Yahoo.com and not Yahoo.ca

Getty Images Letter Forum / Re: An Experiment Against Getty

I am looking at the copyright applications. Did Getty just obtain the copyright 3 weeks ago? Am I reading that correctly? Many of the photo's were taken  5 or 6 years ago but the copyright is effective March 4, 2013 and March 13, 2013 and some of them are just applications for copyright.

The original complaint to the AG was in 2012.

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to post this in, but I thought this was interesting.

The CBC is a national TV channel here in Canada similar to NBC, CBS, Fox.  Most cities have a local affiliate. Basically, they obtained permission from Leuthold to use some of her 9/11 photos in a special broadcast that they were going to air. The agreement was for one broadcast, but the CBC ended up broadcasting it several times during several years. Leuthold then sued them for over $21 million dollars for copyright infringement. Although she did win in court, she was only awarded less than $20,000.00 dollars. Very long read, but very interesting.

I sent Greg a recap of my story.

I don't think my Getty letters are going to be much help for whatever it is he has planned next.

Getty Images Letter Forum / Re: Oscar Helping Canadians - Still Unclear

I believe that since your letter came from Getty USA you can hire Oscar. I am canadian and my letter came from Getty USA. I hired Oscar and have been pleased with the outcome.

After spending a couple of hours reading many of the posts on this forum I hired Oscar. Let me tell you, a weight was immediately lifted off my shoulders. $195 was a bargain, if you ask me. You can always hire a local lawyer, but what are the chances that their credentials will match Oscars?
