MasterFile -Required monthly payment with postdated checks

I am a web designer and hired an illustrator as a subcontractor to design my client's site some time ago. He put on a registered image that was not paid for. I thought I paid him for it but have to proof of that. My client received a bill for $4,000 for a postage stamp size image on their site. I had no idea this was rights protected and shocked my illustrator would use that type of image. I do not want my client to have the burden to pay and accept responsibility. My problem is I don't have this kind of money. I'm barely surviving. I reported less than $20K on my income tax last year. I can't hardly afford to pay my medical insurance of $500 a month and they want me to sign off on an agreement and send them postdated checks so that they get paid $500 a month until it is paid off. They lowered it to $2,000 and said that is as low as they can go. It's medical insurance or Master File for me. What should I do?

There may be certain defenses and arguments kat that you may not be addressing. You can contact me at xxx and we may be able to help you get that number down to a fair level. Also, can your sub-contractor contribute any   money - he has the real responsibility here.
