How about using the sticky function to put key threads at the top of the various forums?

Also, I bet Matthew still has plans to finish the ebook he was working on. Having that available would give new comers a time-saving option if they don't have the time or energy to read the entire forum, which took me almost three days over a year and a half ago. And there's a lot more information (valuable information, I might add) that's been compiled here since then.

How iconic and ironic that Getty Images uses many of the same arguments it rejects from the little people from whom they extort so much money for infringements that in probably more than 98% of the cases are innocent to begin with.

I hope they get burned for millions and millions.

Terrific summation, Oscar. Right on the button!

For those just receiving a Getty letter, the seven words above come from a senior citizen (me) who did his homework on ELI and consequently learned he would be a fool to pay a dime to the copyright extortionists.

I can say from personal experience, too, that it's extremely satisfying to stand up to copyright trolls like Getty Images and their collection agent Timothy B. McCormack and not give into their misrepresentations and downright lies regarding copyright infringement.

Here's hoping for another five good years of education from ELI. Thanks to Matthew and Oscar for keeping the site going. And thanks to Robert and Jerry and Greg and SG and Lucia and Peeved and all the other regulars on the forum who continue to contribute so much to educate others.

Oscar, is it normal for intellectual property attorneys to be poorly schooled in formal grammar and traditional syntax associated with the English language?

I thought at first it was just copyright troll and collection agent Timothy B. McCormack and his office full of illiterates who sent out error-filled settlement demand letters, but at this point in my law education from the University of ELI, I'm now starting to think that most lawyers playing the copyright extortion game either can't write English or else have so little respect for the intelligence of the people they're sending their letters to that they don't bother to even try to write as if they had at least finished high school.

What's really absurd is that most of the letters I've seen are boilerplate form letters, anyway. You'd think college educated extortionists pulling down 40% or more of a settlement fee for sending out a form letter would at least have enough pride to send out a professional one.

I know, I know. As my blushing bride of close to half a century always says, "Dear, you expect too much from lawyers. Stop being so old school. Stop expecting professional correspondence from an honest lawyer who's representing an honest client who in good faith wants to resolve a legitimate issue. In other words, get your head out of your ass, Mulligan, and go wash the dishes before you get all worked up into an ELI frenzy and end up shitting your pants again!"

I nominate that infamous copyright troll and collection agent Timothy B. McCormack for February's Asshat of the Month Award.

Matt, that's a classic for the ELI Historical Society to prominently feature in the first as well as future editions of The History of ELI.

Reading your experiences with this person confirms my belief that many people truly are stupid... and that's why Getty Images and its copyright troll and collection agent Timothy B. McCormack and his "Mistress of Misrepresentation" Ashanti A. Taylor so easily profit.

Added to my resource folder as declaratory judgment ammunition should I ever hear from Getty or its copyright troll lawyer and collection agent Timothy B. McCormack or his "Mistress of Misrepresentation" paralegal Ashanti A. Taylor. Thanks, Oscar!

If I were you at this point, I'd send one email telling them I won't reply to additional emails and if they have anything else to say, to send it by registered postal service. Tell them you want official paper at this point on this matter because you will be sending it to the agency in your country that looks into those who demand money without a legal right to do so.

I forget the name of the agency in the U.K. that polices collection agencies, but you'll find it in one of the threads here on ELI in this U.K. section.

My experience here in the U.S. with Getty Images and its copyright trolling lawyer and collection agent Timothy B. McCormack and his paralegal Ashanti A. Taylor is that these people are nothing but hot air who capitalize on those easily intimidated.

Between automation, out-sourcing, the lawyers, and the politicians (who are almost all lawyers much to my disgust), in a few years there won't be any jobs in this country for most people other than WalMart greeter or hamburger flipper. God knows how my grandchildren are going to survive when the 1%ers and those striving to be 1%ers at any cost have total control.

The republic as the founders envisioned it is gone, and I don't see it returning, thanks to the greedy bastards who care only about money and power and thanks also to those of us who saw it coming but lacked the aggression gene needed to fight back tit for tat with these human sharks.

Fascinating. I'd love to see copyright troll and collection agent Timothy B. McCormack and his paralegal Ashanti A. Taylor grilled by this particular judge. What a comedy of errors that transcript would produce, eh?

Thanks for sharing this, Greg.

Cranky fish and Greg, excellent find!

I've added this important statement to my preparation folder for a declaratory judgment, which is my route of continuance if I ever hear again from the collection goons at Getty Images or from that copyright troll and collection agent Timothy B. McCormack or his paralegal Ashanti A. Taylor of Seattle, Washington.

I agree with Ian... the letter appears quite amateurish and reads as if it were written by a Nigerian spammer for whom written English is perhaps a seventh language, one of those scammers who wants to send you eighteen million dollars if you'll just provide him with a $1,200 certified check to cover handling costs of the eight mil transfer.

SG, excellent find. Thank you for sharing this superb overview and useful  resources.

S.G., welcome back. Thanks for the good insights and analysis of Carner's new business model.

Too bad Carner and his ilk can't use a business model that doesn't take advantage of people making innocent mistakes with images. (I'd estimate the percentage of conscious infringement is quite low.)

But then guys like Carner would have to actually put in an honest day's labor, and God knows trolls aren't going to do that when they can extract financial settlements simply by mailing letters.

It's unfortunate (and telling) that Carner has never addressed the important matter image seeding.

Happy New Year to you, S.G., and to all the other ELI regulars and visitors who do what they can to put an end to these extrajudicial payment extraction schemes.
