Interesting, I would like to know what happens with that.

Also just thought of this for anyone wanting to send a settlement check in the future they could write/print on the back of the check a clause something like:

By depositing this check (insert agency/troll name) settles this matter completely and releases all future claims regarding case #######.

I am not a lawyer and maybe Oscar or someone will know how to word it better but if they cash a check with a release on it I can’t see how they could do anything else to you.  Also you can still give them a taste of their own medicine by putting on it “This check is not valid after 14 days.

Just took a look at check image from my bank.  Has several things written on it, an invoice # as well as what looks like it might be a different settlement number written above the original settlement number....this was obviously NOT deposited mistakenly, a lot of work went into generating new numbers, etc. 

Don't have original Getty letter with me right now, when I get home I'm thinking of doing the following:

logging into Getty settlement site with my original number and access code, seeing if compliance stuff is still up there, or if it is gone or listed as paid or settled...logging in with new # written above it and doing the same...

once I do this I will let everyone know what happens when I try to log in...

Good article BuddhaPi, I think that the limitation or removal of free an open Wi-Fi in airports, libraries, cafés etc. would be a bit extreme and imagine the outcry over it would be tremendous.   If you keep following their logic where would it end? Would you be able to buy a new router for your home without being able to prove you could set it up securely? Would companies that make routers be required to disable them being set up openly, I realize that I am really stretching it here but I am just trying to make a point the we need to use some common sense here or there will be no end to it, but then again common sense and trolls are oxymoron’s .

But CF in-house counsel Marc Randazza says EFF is 'lying' when it says holding a Wi-Fi subscriber liable for allowing his roommate's infringement will result in no more free Wi-Fi networks at airports, etc.

Hey guys sorry if this article is posted elsewhere we have info about Carreon in a few different threads.  Here is an article where he talks to another reported about his reasoning’s for filing the suit to shut down Mathew Inman’s fundraising activities.

I love Matthew Inman’s response.  I also did a Google search for Carreon and hit the images link and right there on the first page was the Bear love picture from Inman’s dissection of Carreon’s first letter, too funny. 

I think Matthew hit the nail on the head with the title of this thread.  It almost seems like Carreon sat down and wrote out a list of “What can I do to make myself look bad, draw all kinds of negative attention to myself and my client”.   Reading the links Mathew provided above Carreon certainly seems to have a history of making some poor decisions in the past, albeit that it appears this was back in 2006 and has had no infractions since.

This will probably be one of those moments when you are looking back at your life and say to yourself “What was I thinking” .

Thank you so much April and very well said.  I concur with everything you said; secrecy, greed and the unethical business practices of the copyright trolls are what keep this alive.  It’s a shame when someone does settle with them; the victims are forced to sign an agreement that says they are not allowed to discuss any part of the settlement.  I do realize that this is a “Standard” clause in most settlements but why have it unless you have something to hide. 
 I am happy that this has brightened your day, you are not alone in this and I know you are under attack right now with DMCA takedown notices and more than what is posted here I’m sure.  You are not alone in your fight; there is a strong community here to draw upon.  Hang in there and let us know what we can do to help.

Thanks Jerry!  I am afraid that the amount of people who just pay has to be high or it would not be profitable for the stock photo companies to continue perusing there current business model.   Look at HAN where Glen Carner stated that half of his income comes from infringement collections.  I do think that the more people we can educate and help get the word out we will see a change in the stock companies business model, not too soon I’m afraid but it has been shown time and again that companies that don’t treat their customer base with respect will have to change or fail.

And thanks for the offer, if you or any of the other victims are in the Cincinnati area I’d be happy to talk to you and have a beer.

Good for you Greg. I agree the best way to combat the practice of trolling is to be open and direct. I've done a talk at a couple different user groups in LA and I am surprised at the number of people that just paid up.

I also agree that it's up to each individual to "come out" in their own time and when they are ready. But since the stock footage industry has been at this for a few years now, more and more people will be reaching the end of their three year window. I suspect that we'll start to see an increase in people willing to speak "on the record" about this.

By the way, my real name is Jerry Witt. If any extortion victims are ever out in LA, give me a shout and I'd be happy to grab a beer with you.

The last I heard was on the Aloha case and they have filed a countersuit against HAN.  You can read about it here.  I’m sorry I am not familiar with the Dollar case but I will see what I can find out, or perhaps someone else has some information available.

I agree, we all have our part and do what we can, again, I am not suggesting anyone do this unless they are ready and I am certainly not suggesting that anyone who remains anonymous is not doing their part, they are.  We all support ELI how we can, weather through contributions, participating in the forums or adding new information, we all do our part. I just feel for me I wanted to let Getty know I am going to fight them and let them know who it is that is doing it.
