On Monday, after multiple attempts over several years, Canada's House of Commons passed Bill C-11 (previously known by other names), a sweeping copyright reform bill. Senate approval is all but assured, and the bill is essentially certain to become law in the near future. Luckily, unlike SOPA/PIPA in the States, C-11 is not a ridiculous, draconian internet lockdown bill. In fact, there's a lot to celebrate in the bill, though that celebration is marred by one significant problem: the digital locks portion, which is similar to the DMCA's anti-circumvention rules.

Hows about foregoing insurance and making sure only licensed images or images you create are used..the trolls will just milk the insurance company, your rates will rise and nothing changes...business as usual for the trolls..

When hiring 3rd parties make sure it is in the contract that any images used must be purchased and licensed and reciepts and paperwork must be provided...pretty simple, yet pro-active.

I'm going to cut to the chase here as a web developer, and web host provider, this is what I would do and have done in the past to assist my clients and keep them happy, which is of utmost importance to me..

Have your client hire Oscar to draft the letter, then you somehow pay back the client, whether in cash, or future work... this is the easiest solution to keep everyone happy.

I've had a client get the letter ( actually 2 clients). the client supplied the images to me, so it was not my fault in any way shape or form, I had them hire Oscar and credited their accounts, it solved the issue and my client were more than satisified.

Timmy McCormack will be next in line, after NCS sends it back.. The dollar amount has nothing to do with anything, copyright infringement is a federal matter, so small claims court does not come into play, and yes IF they filed it would need to be where you are located, which adds to the cost factor..

Yes sbritton, it's a number games, and they hardly ever file suit and when they do it's usually for many images.
