Matt, I love the chart. That's a very nice, clean and professional infographic. It will be interesting to watch it grow. Maybe we can have an animation showing how this thing grows tentacles over time.

Oscar, that's a pretty funny concept. It seems that so far the trolls all have "Get out of jail free" cards. For now.

Mulligan, I totally agree with you. Just wanted to mention it's spelled "cojones". "Cajones" is Spanish for "drawers," as in the drawers of a desk. "Cajones" can also mean "boxes" or "crates."

In any case, who cares about the spelling? It's the thought that counts!  8)

Moe, I had no idea that "cajones" was properly spelled as "cojones." Thanks for setting me straight on that one. I'll definitely be more on the ball the next time I write out that word.

One of the "cajones" definitions made me think of a joke I heard from my young grandson recently...

Question: What's the dirtiest thing in the house?

Answer: A dresser that's never changed its drawers.

We both got a good laugh out of that one. (Yes, you're right, it doesn't take much to amuse me.)

Finally, if I had a vulgar streak in me, I'd write a few words about how I'll let Peeved comment on the "boxes" definition of "cajones," but thank God I lack that streak.

The ELI Academy looks interesting!

Stinger, you make some excellent points. Because of my years and a general belief that the "old ways are best" and most likely other factors it would take Freud and Jung to unearth, I personally prefer reading transcripts to watching videos.

With that said, I've watched almost all the videos here on ELI, but that's because I have a major interest in the topics and also because of the community vibes coming off Matt, Robert, and Oscar... and the guests, of course.

I'm convinced effectively using video is a necessity in today's digital world, though I mourn the passing of transcripts, which I personally prefer because I can read a LOT faster than I can watch and I can also comprehend significantly more with the written word than I can while listening.

Peeved, I was thinking of you!  :)

Actually, I probably should have written cajones or ovaries rather than what I did write, which is a physical impossibility, at least in most instances.

Which company are you moving your domains to, Robert, if I may be so bold to ask? No problem if you don't care to answer this. I'm just being nosy!

Marvelous map, Matt.

Quick Saturday Morning Rant:

I expect to see this map of greedy bastards grow exponentially in the next twelve months.

I contend that we're just seeing the tip of the copyright trolling business model at this point. Given the number of people (lawyers as well as business owners who'll do just about anything to make easy money), I expect us to see trolling get worse before it gets better.

Additionally, I'm not at all confident about politicians and our legal system catching up by legislating digital age copyright laws that are fair to content creators as well as content providers.

I'm just glad ELI is here to educate those who are going to get letters from all the ugly trolls out there and that some of those who get the letters will have the cajones and ovaries to stand up to the various payment extract schemes we going to see.

That blog post was good reading, especially because I learned a wonderful new descriptive phrase for the copyright trolls: douchenozzle!

I also couldn't help but think of copyright troll and collection agent Ashanti A. Taylor of the Timothy B. McCormack Intellectual Property law firm when I read this:

"I will pass the file on to our litigation department and you can contend with them."

I kid you not... the above line brought back fond memories of the day Ms. Taylor sent me my "last chance" and "final warning" letter where she informed me that if I didn't cough up big bucks the McCormack Law Firm would recommend litigation to Getty Images. This after Getty Images told me they would "escalate" to outside counsel if I didn't pay the original amount.

In other words, a looping case of escalators escalating escalations to a point that would dry up a douchenozzle!

As usual, the bottom line... no proof, no pay.

The rest is just gamesmanship and bullshit.

188
I find the whole thing creepy.
McCormack strikes me as buffoon... but I have a weird feeling about these guys.

SG, ditto. I have the same crawling feeling alone the length of my spine with these fellows.

Great work on tracking down this Wharton School of Business troll. I wonder what various WSB professors would say about these copyright trolling extraction schemes? Is the predominant attitude in the business world these days, "If it's legal or close enough to legal to stand up in court for a few rounds, then morality be damned and full speed ahead to the big bucks so we can join the One Percenters?"

There's a WordPress plugin on the market until six p.m. EST today (9/13/2012) that I think raises some complex copyright issues, and I'm hoping some of you can take a few minutes to watch this sales pitch video about this "TrustJacker" plugin:

Using this plugin to frame content (articles) on other sites with an ad the site knows knowing about seems legally dangerous to me. What do you think?

Oscar, thank you for writing this letter and taking action against a man who certainly needs to be looked at very closely by appropriate authorities.

No proof = no money.

Here in the states, copyright troll and collection lawyer Timothy B. McCormack of Seattle, Washington, does exactly the same thing. He sends out a few letters demanding more money than Getty's original demand, knowing that many people will freak and pay if they get a letter with a LAWYER letterhead on it (oh, scary!) and think, "Oh, Getty's really serious about this. They've hired a lawyer. I better pay."

The point is, the slime-encrusted lawyers and collection agents working for Getty for a percentage of the settlement do not have legal proof to demand money because if they did have it you can be sure they'd present it from the get-go.

Like Robert said, tell them to pound sand.

Good episode, guys. Thanks!

Honest to God, you just have to sit and shake your head in wonder every time one of these new letters rises to the surface of the septic sank.

I hope the person who received this letter takes advantage of Oscar's letter program or Matthew's phone call.

195
No email and no phone calls. Keep it all in writing on paper delivered by the US Postal Service. Keep it simple.

Hunker down for the long term and enjoy the game with the Getty Image minimum wage trolls and then their outside counsel collection agents like Seattle lawyer Timothy B. McCormack and his paralegal trolls Ashanti A. Taylor and Sam Wilson.

Don't get overly stressed. After a few rounds of all this you'll quickly see that this is nothing but a payment extraction scheme used to collect large amounts of money without providing a shred of legal proof of the right to that money.
