No troll related per se, but for those that value their privacy..

With just a week to go before Google changes to its new privacy policy that allows it to gather, store and use personal information, users have a last chance to delete their Google Browsing History, along with any damning information therein.

I see some big problems coming to Pinterest as well as users, just a matter of time.. This is another worthy read:

“Member Content” is defined as anything you post, upload, publish, transmit, etc. on the site.  This includes pinning from the web and re-pinning right from Pinterest itself.    I immediately thought of the ridiculously gorgeous images I had recently pinned from an outside website and, while I gave the other photographer credit right in my pin (how many of you do that by the way?  Not that it makes it any more legal, just sayin’….), I most certainly could not think of any way that I either owned those photos or had a license, consent or release from the photographer who owned them.  But did I somehow have a “right” to put them on Pinterest?  “I MUST have that right,” I reasoned, “after all, this is what Pinterest is ALL ABOUT!”

I had them at one time, and would be willing to bet I still have them somewhere, I've been looking for the last week or so, If my memory serves me ( which sometimes it doesn't) I think it was a stack of 10-12 CD's, broken down into category's, I'll keep digging, may have to head into the attic next..

Getty Images is no longer owned by the Getty Family, tho Mark getty still sits on the board. I think he was a great grandson / grandson or something that started the business, who later sold it to some sort of holding company. Yes the elder Getty was filthy rich and he got that was by taking advantage of people, and was known to not be a very nice personin general..

From Wikipedia:

In 1993, Mark Getty and Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Klein co-founded Getty Investments LLC. Mark Getty is the company's chairman.

In September 1997, Getty Communications, as it was called at the time, merged with PhotoDisc, Inc. to form Getty Images.

In April 2003 Getty Images entered into a partnership with Agence France-Presse (AFP) to market each other's images.

Getty Images acquired the Michael Ochs Archives in February 2007.The Michael Ochs Archives were described by The New York Times as "the premier source of musician photography in the world".

In 2008, the private equity firm Hellman & Friedman acquired Getty Images.

In 2009, Flickr announced a partnership with Getty Images in which specially selected users could submit photographs for stock photography usage and receive payment.

In 2010 this was changed so that users could label images as suitable for stock use themselves.

There are definately issues with the "stone collection" as they were available on CD years ago, then GI snapped them up..

"**** I have the absolute best Intellectual Copyright attorney in Hawaii and over 12 attorneys inother states in the USA not including a team of attorneys in the U.K., Germany, France, Canada,Japan and Scandinavia.
These people know what they are doing."

The so-called "Team" with the exception of Steele, do indeed have stellar records..

  • Brandon Sand - admitted to the bar Dec. 1, 2010
  • Julie Stewart -  has an acting or music background and likes to use a picture of a famous rock star for her profile picture on facebook.. I guess it's okay for her to infringe....but I degress
  • Russell Aldrich - admitted to the Texas bar Nov. 4, 2011 ( not a typo!)
  • Peter T. Holt. - he doesn't like his name associated with the term "extortion" but he also likes to threaten jail time for copyright infringement..clearly experienced in this area of law, but I degress again...
[li]Gil Zvulony, possibly the brightest of the bunch, as he has not yet reared his head as of yet, but it is worth noting that he doesn't pussy foot around, he demands $5000.00 - $10,000 per image!
[/li][/list]

I would suspect that this "Team" is not hand picked by Vincent K Tylor, or Glen Carner the owner of Hawaiian Art Network, but rather picked from a list that Picscout has..

I also notice VK Tylor mention copyright Services International, this was also owned by Glen Carner, but appears to out of business at present...

And with that I leave you with this:

I'm liking this image replacement idea, I just might do this on my site, but instead of placing "image removed for copyright review" I'll use "image removed to boycott stock image copyright trolls" even though "my house is in order"..

With that many domains ( if they are stil online) it would be in your best interest to be proactive in protecting your self from future letters.. Oversees developers could care less about our copyright laws, and chances are they did not have a "royalty free" cd, but rather just grabbed images off the net. I would strongly suggest removing any and all images that you do not have a license for, if you don't want to go thru that, you can try to block picscout from your servers, but there is no guarantee, this would be 100% successful.

As for bringing this to the media, I'm sure we would all agree it would be nice, but you also have to remember that the media is highly dependent on Getty Images, most news organizations don't even have photogrpahers on staff anymore, they all seem to use Getty. Watch CNN for an hour and count how many times you see their watermark on still images.

Not to mention, the trolls might also like to target the users.

The Great Pinterest Divide: To Opt Out or Not

There’s no doubt that Pinterest is one of the hottest names in social media right now. The social networking startup, which allows users to “pin” images found from all over the Web, has become wildly popular not only for its ability to attract over 11 million users, but also it’s popularity among women.

you can expect pretty much the same tone/response with a letter, but at least you'll have something that shows some good faith on your part, IF it ever goes further..

Yeah, ask a couple of questions, which they refuse to answer and they won't talk to you anymore..once again looking for the low hanging fruit with which to use their scare tactics, in the hopes that people will just roll over and pay..and a good amount probably do just that. You will need to educate your client on this matter and possibly suck up any cost involved to keep your client happy. ( which they probably aren't right at the moment)

Good reply from Bekka! You have to remember when "speaking with them, they are generally a bunch of paper pushing monkeys, reading the corporate script.
(sorry if I insulted monkeys). Writing is always the best option.
