there is no list.

either take your own images or purchase images, be sure to always read / understand and print the license and keep receipts... or what I do and inform your client to supply any images, explain the proper way to obtain them. This makes them responsible for licensing, after all the stock companies are going after the domain/site owners.. Having it done this way eliminates you altogether.. If you purchase the images, you'r client may still get a letter, and have to drag you into it.

Anything is possible, the artist may have given permission for folks to use the image as wallpapers, we have no way of knowing any of this Bottom line is if you don't have a license for the image in question, or a receipt that you purchased said image, you're infringing, whether or not the other sites are in the clear is irrelevant to your particular case

I don't think anybody gets 10 letters or more, generally after the second or third, it's sent to NCS recovery ( collection agency) or to their attorney McCormack, who will send you letters.. It's not going to magically go away, they will continue to be a thorn in your side, unless you take action.

yup pretty much useless, the plug-in is just creating a regular robots.txt file, and giving you the option to change/edit via the wordpress admin dashboard... You'd have much more control by creating your own.

The problem here, is you don't where the images came from, the site owner may have a license for the images, (or not) but generally the license is not transferable. The days of FREE images are long gone for the most part.

Here is an article that will be helpful and it has some link for free image sites

http://extortionletterinfo.com/boycott.htm

another good source is freedigitalphotos.net, the selection is much smaller tham most, but the images are in-expensive or free providing you give credit back...again read the terms!

you can try to search the copyright office site to see if your image/artist is there.

Can't help but notice all of the results on the first page are all wallpaper sites...I think downloading a wall paper image, would be a bit different than using the same image on a site, as thats not it's inteneded purpose. I would also guess that most of these "FREE" wall paper sites are loaded with swiped images, not of the 20 or so i glacned at only 1 looked legit, until I looked at the terms, then not so much. legimate sites will clearly outline the privacy policy, terms of use, and they should also have a visiable DCMA takedown link, which will give them safe harbor ids someone were to upload someones elses images. do a search for coca cola logo and it will yield over 4 million results, this doesn't mean I can use the logo as I see fit...just say'in..

you'll need to educated not only in terms of the letter, but also copyright in general if you want to stay in business for any lenght of time..

the ip s for getty, masterfile, corbis are not relevant, it's picscout, all of these companies are using this software, which is now owned by Getty Images.

I completely understand, and it's not something I have the stomach or patience for..but maybe someone will  come along and jump in, I think it makes for not only good dialog, but also gets more info out there with perhaps new options...

I agree 1--% that robots.txt cannot be relied upon, and while I also agree we need to lock our doors, I think there needs to be something changed in the laws to make all agents obey robots.txt or face the music..

If you lock your door, and I come behind you and break in, and you're neighbor ( or someone else) sees me, chances are high that i'll be busted for B & E..
Yes enforcing it would be a difficult proposition, but if something were to be put in place, it's easy enough to look at logs, ect..

Evan Stone has been around for a while pulling this stuff, he once sued an 80 something grandmother for downloading over 400 porn movies.. problem is he has no way of proving anything, just because it came back to her IP doesn't mean I was sitting at her curb mooching her internet connection and downloading to my hearts content.., I think once enough judges see this type of behavior, it will help our cause, and Righthave is sure helping in that regard.

I've been in a similar situation, with a client getting the letter ( all images I use are generally supplied by the client and it's up to them to obtain the images correctly, I go to great lenghts, explaining all of this to them.) anyway in this case there was an image that was perhaps used as a placeholder, as neither I nor my client can explain where the image came from...but it's there.. What I did was ended up having my client retain Oscar, I then credited my client for future work / hosting.. You will probably have to follow this as well , as GI won't want to deal with you, they want the domain owner plain and simple.

Here's some reading regarding legal ramifications of ignoring robots.txt... basically what I'm getting at is stopping picscount from "trespassing"...and abiding by rules set forth by webmasters. my heads all a jumble at this point..

Keep in mind some/most of this is fairly old, but I wondering if any progress has been made from a legal standpoint..

http://pubs.cli.vu/pub238.php - what caught my eye here was section #5

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_scraping#Legal_issues - again could this be enforceable??

http://www.chillingeffects.org/linking/faq.cgi#QID460 -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trespass_to_chattels - interesting concept...

Sorry for the really long reads, i'm sure none of this would stop the letters, but if picscout itself can be stopped, GI would then have to resort to manually looking for infringments, which would crastically slow the process or not even allow it to be profitable anymore.. not to mention the money GI just spent purchasing picscout..

Can anyone say chapter 7!

The first trial in a Righthaven LLC copyright infringement lawsuit is set for Nov. 7, causing Righthaven and an adversary to now blame each other for not resolving the suit prior to trial.

A federal judge suggested Friday he’ll dismiss another Righthaven LLC copyright infringement lawsuit because of the company’s lack of standing to sue over Las Vegas Review-Journal material.

Robert C. Jones, chief United States judge for Nevada, didn’t appear to be persuaded by a Righthaven attorney’s arguments during a hearing that its lawsuit against website operator NewsBlaze LLC should be allowed to proceed. NewsBlaze.com, based in Folsom, Calif., is a news aggregation site.
